Sunshine

He had never seen a sunrise. That was the thought he woke up to. Surprisingly it was a very sound sleep. He had not slept like that since "that day". He was dreaming about his mother. He was a child again and was playing in the silent house on a hot afternoon. Suddenly he missed his mother and went to the room where she was taking her afternoon nap with her long dark hair dangling from the side of the bed. He went and just lay by her side and he was in the safest place in the world.
Then he woke up with a jolt. He wondered why he hasn't seen a sunrise ever especially considering that he prided himself being a nocturnal. He has ofcourse seen it on t.v. and had always being intrigued by it. It was one event that happened every day of his longish life. It was an event that happened irrespective of where he was, yet he never saw it. That is how he lived his life. Taking every thing for granted. Thinking there was enough time for him to do things. But there wasn't. Not anymore.

There was not a day he had not thought about that day. In fact even when he was not thinking, a part of his brain was replaying every second of it, in full details, and editing the sequences in ways of what it might have been afterall. In every other alternate version it was better than it actually was. The truth was horrific. Beyond anything he could have fathom. And despite all efforts he could not escape the reality of it. No version could drown the pain of it.

The things that followed was a blur till the present moment. It was a long ordeal, with a lengthy investigation, trial, appeals and petition for mercy. But it all passed in a jiffy. He barely felt conscious through it and just passed by through it all.

The moment had come. The guards were outside the cell. They opened it with a long key and the heavy door made a loud metal sound. He was escorted by people he had become acquainted with in course of his confinement. There was a silence. A dead one. There were sounds of the guards boots thudding the stone floor and stairs but the silence was deafening and drowing everything else.

His mind was clustered. Memories and feelings overwhelmed it. But there was not a single thought. The taste of mango was remembered by his mouth and his nostrils could smell aroma of the winter mist . A big tear escaped from his eye.

As the thick black mask was being pulled down his face his eyes
wandered to the distant horizon. And there he got a glimpse of it. The magnificent red ball was rising from nowhere tearing through the darkness. He smiled. It was the best sight of his life.
